Once a month throngs of partiers descend on Haad Rin beach on the island of Ko Phangan, Thailand when the moon is full. While this is scene is more backpacker than jetsetter, it’s extremely worthy of a post on this blog. If you enjoy a hedonistic party scene, electronic music, and dancing the night away on a remote island getaway then experiencing the Full Moon Party is a MUST.
Depending upon the month, the crowd ranges from 20,000 to 30,000 locals and tourists alike. Your senses will be pushed to the limits as you witness an array of worldly partiers dancing, performing and having fun all night long. There are fire dancers, tattoo artists, buckets of alcohol and fireworks to entertain until the sun rises. Techno, trance, drum & base and reggae pump from each of the bars lined up on Haad Rin beach. It’s a “magical” experience to witness.
Ko Phangan does not have many luxury accommodations, although in recent years more are cropping up. For the most part the island is a backpackers paradise with cheap, no frills bungalows for rent. Most places on the island require guests to stay a minimum 3-5 nights when the Full Moon Party is scheduled.
Another option is staying on Koh Samui, the neighboring island, which has more choices for the true jetsetters ranging from budget accommodations to luxury resorts. You can easily buy tickets for round trip speedboat service from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan to join in on the revelry for the evening. This is a commitment though. If you do this, don’t plan on seeing your bed on Samui until daylight.
The Full Moon Party is an event that every party enthusiast should witness. With plenty of budget options available, you will be able to stay either on Koh Phangan or Koh Samui at a reasonable rate. Just make sure to book early as you are competing for accommodations with many others planning the same trip. You can find great rates for both islands on Asia Web Direct.
